According to the two-line Arabic inscription in thuluth script on its mirror panel, the fountain was built in AH 1168 / AD 1754 by Çeteci Abdullah Paşa, a former governor of Erzurum. His era, in which more fountains and water structures were commissioned than under any other patron, marks one of the high points of the city's water works.
